Early & Periodic Screening Diagnosis & Treatment (EPSDT)


What is EPSDT?

Early and Periodic Screening, Diagnosis and Treatment (EPSDT) is a federally mandated Medicaid Program for children from birth to age 21 .

EPSDT is a package of benefits for Medicaid eligible children to ensure the early identification of conditions that can impede children’s natural growth and development and avoid long-term costs associated with a long-term disability. 

EPSDT covers medically necessary services that typically fall outside the range of Medicaid covered services. For services to be covered, they must be:

  • Deemed medically necessary
  • Non-experimental or non-investigative in nature
  • Referred to by a physician 

What services are covered by EPSDT?

EPSDT covers screening, diagnostic and treatment services. 

The most frequently covered services through EPSDT include:

  • Personal care & assistance
  • Behavioral treatment services
  • Vision therapy
  • Private duty nursing
  • Medical formulas & supplements
  • Hearing devices
  • Assistive technology devices

How to request EPSDT services in Virginia

  1. The service must be medically necessary. You will need a letter from your primary care physician noting the need for the service.
  2. Submit the request to the Department of Medical Assistance Services (DMAS) by calling (804)786-6134 or emailing epsdt@dmas.virginia.gov
